not for vegetarians

[a lot of pink meat shaped as a pig, complete with fake eyeballs]

I saw this image on Tastespotting (page 4).
The thing that struck me was how unsuitable this image, of a pig-shaped meat-sculpture (complete with eyeballs) would be for vegetarians. (Evil Grin).
I think this is a butcher’s display, and not a meal centrepiece. (I hope it is, anyway!) There is a certain humour and cleverness here, complete with semi-pained, quizical expression. I wonder if any kids were psychologically scarred, seeing this, or just temporarily vegetarianized? What do you think?

vegetables in Caracas

This photo journal story from the BBC about a vegetable garden in Caracas, has got me thinking.
The idea is: take one big city, add an organic vegetable garden (with attached stall). This is so you can teach city people a bit more about food and how it is grown.

It has been accused of being a publicity stunt, but I think it is a good idea. It is subsidized by the government, but what isn’t in Venezuela, a socialist state? The workers, from the country, also are separated from their families- going back to visit every 2 weeks. A more ideal situation would be to have urban-based workers.

It’s not natural to live with concrete surrounding you, this garden adds some much needed greenery, with the advantage over a regular park of growing something needed by the community (food).
The food is organic, and has a great food miles value, nil!
Another plus is the educational aspect, what a cool field trip.

This kind of idea is an example of collective self-sufficiency, which is probably best left for another blog post.

w00t

w00t was the word of urban summer- w00t is a gamer’s expression of joy or “awesome”.

Urban Summer went really well- unfortunately, my internet has been too slow to blog much. Not to mention my sleep deprived state. :)

Yes, I’m still alive, and will be blogging a bit more about life and tech etc, as time allows.

urban summer

If you’re in the Mitcham (that’s the suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) area next week, drop in to “The Factory” 8 Simla Street, because we’re opening a café and drop in centre from 8 till midnight Monday through to Saturday. There’ll be good food for sale, live music, soccer, box war, karaoke, battle of the bands, lounge, pool tables, and much more.

Come in and say hello!

cartoons that make me chuckle

There are many cartoons and cartoonists out there, these are really good ones that make me chuckle, that appeal to my sense of humour. I like lots of cartoons, but these are the top ones. (links point to wikipedia entries)

laughter is good for the soul.

2007 begins

Well, this is my second look at 2007 after the first euphoric moments and fantastic fireworks display (seen from Brighton Pier) and yeah, it looks ok. Besides being really really tired, but I expect I’ll get over that.

It is funny to think of where I was for the past two new years- last year I was packing to move to Australia, and the year before that half way through my final year of high school. I have now finished one year of university (3 more to go!) and laugh to think of the differences and similarities between secondary and tertiary education.

I don’t make new year’s resolutions, I never get around to thinking about them. 2007 looks like a good year, more of the same and no major changes. I’m looking forward to it.
