revolutionizing

I was surfing Paul Stamatiou’s blog, and found an interesting comment from a post entitled Life After Vista.

If I had nickel for every time the word “revolutionizing” has been mouthed from either camp…

An interesting thought- the concept of revolution has been taken over by the business world.

The way I see revolution is a movement that is started by maybe a few people, but is taken to heart by the masses. Perhaps these masses of people are discontented with the way things are, the state of their lives.

So the people revolt. There is a revolution, and things change. A revolution is quick, sudden and complete change, no matter how long the build up to it was.

A revolution involves a lot of people, it is something communal that means

blog update

Right so, besides suffering from culture shock and a backlogged inbox, I am back online.

I realize how much I like blogging. So I guess I’ll keep it up. I have a couple of thoughts regarding the blog which I’d like to get some feedback on, so here goes:

I’d like some brutally honest critiques of the blog please- tell me what can stay and what should go, and what you’d like to see.
Thanks- just drop the comment in the box.

ipods, literacy, grafiti and smoking

Well, more things that I’ve noticed.

People smoking. In Bolivia smoking is more a social thing, lighting up at restaurants etc. Here in Australia, people seem really adicted, smoking outside wherever and whenever they can, as smoking is banned in busses and any public buildings.
People Reading. Newspapers, books, magazines, on the train and in the park. A very obvious sign of literacy. wierd really. The only people reading on the busses in Bolivia were uni-students cramming for class.
Music in the form of ipods etc- I knew they were big, but the prevalence of people with buds/’phones is amazing. Lots of white cords, but not as many ipods. Time to buy stocks in hearing aid companies I think.
Grafiti- it’s everwhere along the train tracks, and more intricate than what I’m used to- the classic bubble letter multi-colour grafiti. And meaningless too- a random word like ‘tak’ not much politicised grafiti.

I’m thankful that I can’t afford junkfood, otherwise I would be ten times bigger by now.

culture shock

so here I am in a wierd country that claims my citizenship, and I’ve come across some things that are wierd.

People wearing green- I mean full on kindergarten green.
Flushing the toilet paper.

I like wheelybins and recycling. I dislike the increase in consumerism. I like the fact that the potatoes are easier to peel. I don’t like that they are pretty much tasteless. No variety either- two kinds of potatoes in the supermarket- three if you count “washed” and “brushed” as different kinds. Fruit costs a tonne more, and it’s not fresh. You can tell it’s been in cold storage for a while.
I know, I know, I’ve had it good in South America. I guess farmers here are better paid, which is a good thing.

I like the public transport and the metcard system, I don’t like how they don’t come every five minutes. I don’t like how I have to ride an hour and twenty minutes to get to university. I really don’t like how it is a car oriented society.

I really really hate how I am tuned to hear english, after living in a spanish society, anything in english usually was to me. I am a really good eavesdropper and I hate it- “get out of my head!”

I am missing the international news, but loving the Australia stuff. I like having a real newspaper in the mornings, with fun things like cartoons and sudoku puzzles. Grandma has the crosswords claimed, and the I haven’t gotten the hang of sudoku yet.

Overall though, I’m enjoying it. Sorry for the rant- regular coverage should be resuming soon.

suffering from withdrawl

A seriously quick checkin- arrived safely in Australia, but have not had internet connection. I have been asking nearly everytime I go out if I can use my host’s internet- all the crazy university enrolment stuff is online, I have been neglecting email and the blog.

Hooray for westnet- I’m getting adsl as soon as the modem arrives (Friday! please Friday!)

I have cleaned up the comments- hooray for link screening, as only a few spams showed up. Thanks for sticking around.

Extreme Ironing

Welcome to the home of extreme ironing – the latest danger sport that combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well pressed shirt.

Pretty random, but fun- a good timewaster. Check out the galleries- there are some pretty good pictures there.

One wonders about the practicalities of ironing without a powerpoint nearby.

highlighting the best blogs

I’d like to point out and highlight the blogs that I have rss feeds for, hopefully you might stumble upon a blog that you’d like to read.

I subscribe to more feeds than these, but these are the ones I most like to read.

I’ll probably get slapped for overusing the phrase “fun to read” but anyway.

Packing is going well, btw.

blog update

Just a warning that I am moving (me, not the blog, transcontinently) and thus, with all the packing/emotions/dinners/packing/more emotions, I will not be able to devote as much time to this blog as I would like. I will still try to stick up one post a day, but it might not be as thoughtful/useful/editorial, but perhaps just pointing out something I found on the net.

There is also some half-finished features floating around (like the menu bar at the top) So excuse the fact that they don’t work. Sorry.

I will be back “full time” (hopefully) in two weeks time. Thanks for understanding.
